The large finial stands 13 feet tall, weighs 3,100 lbs., and
is fabricated of hot rolled steel sheets – tubes – shapes, galvanized steel
sheets, stainless steel sheets, wood, and then it is covered with roofing felt, rosin
paper, and copper. This octagon-shaped finial is approximately 6 feet across at its widest
dimension. Two stainless steel internal tubes run from top to bottom to provide a route
for the copper lightning protection cables. There are eight small screened vent areas,
concealed in the finial design, that provide an exit for the ventilation air being drawn
up from the dormers below. |
