The main cross stands 12 feet tall, weighs 1200 lbs., and is
fabricated of steel, wood, stainless steel, and then is covered with roofing felt, rosin
paper, and copper. At the top of the cross is a 3-foot tall lightning protection air
terminal, with two copper lightning protection cables built into the cross and concealed.
These two copper cables, each individually find their way down 275 feet to the street
level where they each are attached to 20 foot long copper rods driven into the ground. The
lightning protection system for this project was designed and provided by the Ready
Electric Company of Louisville. While still in fabrication, the main cross was then
covered with Gold by a process known as "Guilding." The Marshall Gold Leaf
Studious of Wexford, Pennsylvania did this work, in a temporary dust free enclosure built
within a Merrick shop building. |
